WordPress newbie’s always confused about these WordPress terms and always looking for the correct answers to know more about WordPress and its glossary terms. So I decided to create a post which will explain about WordPress glossary terms and uses of the each and every term that used in WordPress tutorials. Attachment is another term in WordPress glossary and let’s discuss it.
What is an Attachment in WordPress?
The term attachment refers to the files that uploaded to your WordPress website. In WordPress, we can easily upload and display any type of files using add media option. The most common files that are uploaded to WordPress are image, video and audio files.
A file will automatically become an attachment to that particular post When a file is uploaded using the add media option from the post edit screen. If it’s uploaded using media library, that file will be unattached but may become attachment when it is inserted into any post.
How To Add Media Files in WordPress?
There are two ways to add media files from WordPress dashboard.
- Using the add media option from the post edit screen – If a file is uploaded using the add media option from the post edit screen, that file will automatically become an attachment to that particular post.
- Using add new option from media library – If it’s uploaded using media library, that file will be unattached but may become attachment when it is inserted into any post.
How To Attach Media Files To Post From Post Edit Screen:
To attach media files to post from post edit screen, First login to your WordPress dashboard and create a new post. Click on add media button at the top of the visual editor menu from the post edit screen and click on upload files and select and upload the image to the post. Now this image will automatically be attached to that post once it published.
The file that attached to the posts can also be attached to multiple posts and also be unattached when those posts are deleted when needed.

How To Attach Unattached Media Files To Post:
First login to your WordPress dashboard and click on add new option under media. Click on select files and simply select the files from your computer and click on upload. Now the files are uploaded but that files will be unattached.
Now you can attach this unattached media file to any post. Simply select add media button on the top of the visual editor menu from the post edit screen and click on media library and select the image which you want to use in the post. Now this image will automatically be attached to that post.
