Functions.php is a theme file used to change and define the WordPress behavior and functions. The Functions.php or a function file acts as a WordPress plugin which helps to add new features and extend the functionalities of a WordPress site through PHP code.
Every theme has its own Functions.php file and can be found in your WordPress theme directory. Even though you’ve installed so many themes on your WordPress site and every theme has its own function file, only active theme file will run its code and apply functions to your WordPress website.
If your theme doesn’t have functions file, you can add one to your theme directory by creating a text file and named it functions.php. Now you can add your own functions to your theme.
A Child theme has its own functions.php file that used to modify your WordPress theme without making any changes to the parent theme files.
How to edit Functions.php file in WordPress?
You can easily access your theme Functions.php file through your WordPress dashboard.
Step 1: Login to your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Editor.
Step 2: You’ll be redirected to theme editor. Now select a theme which you want to edit from select your theme list.
Step 3: Now click on theme functions (Functions.php) file under theme files.
Step 4: Make the changes and click on update file to save the changes.
All changes you made are tied to your present theme. If you change to a new theme, your custom functions will not work.
Always take the backup of your Functions.php file before making any changes. It will help to restore the old data in case of any misconfigurations.
