What is Featured image in WordPress?
Featured image (sometimes called as post thumbnail) is a theme feature which allows developers to chose and add a representative image for post, page and custom post types.
A featured image represents the content, mood or theme of the post. A post can have a single featured image.
How to enable support for Featured image:
To add Featured image Support to a WordPress Theme, Login into your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > editor. Now click on function.php file and add below code and save the file.
add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’ );
Now, Featured image Support enabled to your WordPress Theme. Go to post edit screen of any post and click on screen option. Now you’ll find Featured image option there. Make sure to enable Featured image option by simply clicking on the checkbox in screen options.
Set the Post Thumbnail Size:
The default image sizes of WordPress are a thumbnail, medium, large and the original size. WordPress allows you to change the media settings under WordPress settings that will affect newly uploaded images.
Once you uploaded the images, WordPress will store the original images without doing any modifications. After it becomes an attachment when it is inserted into any post, the system will modify the dimensions to the original image as per media settings.
In order to change the media settings, go to settings >> Media in WordPress dashboard and configure the image sizes as per your needs.
